Current issue areas

Safer, More Reliable Service

For many people, the most important question about trains is simple: “Will it be safe and on time?”

We monitor:

  • Safety improvements at crossings and stations

  • Track and signal upgrades that reduce delays

  • Weather and climate impacts on rail infrastructure

  • Policies and investments that improve reliability

Our goal is to help riders and communities understand what’s being done to keep trains safe and dependable—and where more work is needed.

Stations, Access & Rider Experience

A passenger’s experience doesn’t start when they board the train—it starts long before.

We care about:

  • Station safety and comfort (lighting, waiting areas, signage)

  • Clear information about schedules, platforms, and delays

  • Accessibility for riders with disabilities, older adults, and families with children

  • Easy ways to get to and from stations without needing to drive alone

Well-designed, well-maintained stations make trains more welcoming and help visitors form a positive first impression of our communities.

More Frequent Trains
& Better Schedules

In much of the Carolinas, trains are an option—but not always a convenient one. Limited frequencies and awkward schedules make it hard for many people to choose rail over driving.

We advocate for:

  • More frequent daily trains on key routes

  • Schedules that better match commuter, student, and family travel patterns

  • Improved connections between cities and smaller towns

  • Thoughtful coordination with other modes (local transit, shuttles, etc.)

When trains run more often and at useful times of day, they become a real choice, not a last resort.

Funding, Policy & Public Decisions

Passenger rail doesn’t improve by accident—it improves because of public decisions at the local, state, and federal levels.

We help riders and residents make sense of:

  • How rail projects are funded

  • What new federal and state programs mean for the Carolinas

  • Which agencies and officials are responsible for key decisions

  • How to weigh in on plans, hearings, and comment periods

Our role is to translate the policy side into plain language so more people can participate and speak up for better train service.

Connecting
Communities & Corridors

Passenger rail in the Carolinas is a network of corridors, not just a few isolated routes. When segments are improved or expanded, it changes what’s possible for the entire region.

We focus on:

  • Existing and planned corridors that connect major cities and regional hubs

  • How improvements in one section affect travel times and options elsewhere

  • The role of rail in supporting small towns, rural communities, and tourism

  • Opportunities to connect the Carolinas more effectively to the broader Amtrak network

Our work includes tracking studies, proposals, and public meetings so that residents know when and where decisions are being made about these corridors.

Riders’ Voices & Community Impact

At the heart of our work are the people who ride trains—or would ride if service were better.

We highlight:

  • Rider stories and experiences

  • Examples of how better service can support jobs, education, tourism, and local economies

  • The benefits of rail for traffic congestion, safety, and quality of life

We believe decisions about passenger rail should be grounded in real experiences from across the Carolinas—not just spreadsheets.

How We Work on These Issues

All Aboard Carolinas is a volunteer-driven organization. We:

  • Follow project updates, meetings, and public documents

  • Share clear, accessible explanations through our newsletter and meetings

  • Provide background and talking points so members can contact their elected officials

  • Coordinate with local advocates and national organizations that share similar goals

We are not a government agency, and we don’t run trains. Instead, we focus on information, advocacy, and connection, helping people understand what’s happening and how to respond.
